OWANA – Neighborhood Safety & Bike Theft Prevention

Help Keep Old West Austin Safe!

Neighborhood Safety & Bike Theft Prevention

OWANA has received reports in recent weeks about an increase in bicycle thefts in our neighborhood, so we wanted to share an opportunity to help improve neighborhood safety, and also to prevent bicycle theft.

Neighborhood Safety

One way to improve safety in a neighborhood is through a neighborhood watch. Our Austin Policy Neighborhood Liasion Joshua Lake will be hosting a Neighborhood Watch Training on Saturday, May 2.Old West Austin is comprised of ‘mini-neighborhoods’ within its boundaries, so it would be great if we had volunteers from different parts of the neighborhood to attend. Details below:

  • May 2, 2026

  • 10:00AM to 2:00PM

  • Office of Community Liaison

  • 2410 Grove Blvd Austin, TX 78741

If you are ready to kick off your Neighborhood Watch Program, please complete this application and come spend a half day with us. We have limited space so please submit your application right away. We will send a confirmation email once we have received your request.

The Austin Police (APD) Neighborhood Watch is a community‑driven safety initiative designed to reduce crime, strengthen neighborhood connections, and empower residents to look out for one another. It brings together a cohesive body of concerned, involved, neighbor-participants addressing public safety issues that concern the entire community. This class will provide the foundation that will become your Neighborhood Watch program. You do not need the entire neighborhood to come to this training. One or two people from each neighborhood can go through the training and be the seed for the community.

Preventing Bicycle Theft

We’re in that time of year when it’s particularly nice to ride a bike around town – not too cold, not too hot! Unfortunately this also means that bicycle thefts are on the rise as well. Here are tips for keeping your bike safe and preventing theft of bikes and other items frequently stored with them. In addition, be sure to **register your bike** with Austin Police.

And of course, if you come upon a burglary in progress, call 9-1-1 immediately. Call
3-1-1 or visit
