NOTES FROM THE CHAIR

Hello Old West Austin Neighborhood Association,

Looking forward to seeing you at the September 9th meeting. Lots to talk about.
First: We hope you have had a wonderful summer.
Thank you for your understanding in cancelling the July 4th parade due to weather.

Second: Your insights, quick survey follow-up.
There were over one hundred responses to OWANA’s Spring Survey, which was awesome! Thank you!
We would like to hear a bit more about your thoughts on community events, zoning, and local business involvement.
Please take 4 minutes this week to complete the simple community survey at this link. The survey is due by September 8th. 👍 AND,***Survey participants will receive an extra ticket for the drawings for an ACL Music Festival pass!***

Third: See you at the OWANA Fall General Meeting on September 9th, 6:45 PM at the Mathews Elementary’s Cafeteria. There is lots to cover – your survey insights, events, zoning updates, and special guests.
Plus, the ever-popular drawing for freeACL Music Festival weekend passes (we’ll give away 3). We will also have passes for sale too, we’ll send more information out on that later.

Fourth: Sadly, we wanted torecognizethe passing of Chris Gage, longtime Monday night musician at our neighborhood’s beloved Donn’s Depot. As Sun Radio posted:“We are deeply saddened to hear of the passing of longtime Austin musician Chris Gage.A true staple of our music community, (since 1995) Chris brought joy to countless fans with his Monday night performances at Donn’s Depot and far beyond. His talent, warmth, and love for music touched so many lives, and his presence will be deeply missed. Our thoughts are with his family, friends, and all who had the privilege of sharing in his music.”🧡

On a happier note, Thank YOU neighbors for reading, and a big thank you to all the steering, zoning, events, membership, and finance committee members for your amazing work.
.
You make a difference!!

See you at the September 9th OWANA General Members Meeting.

Sincerely,
Steve Amos

COMMITTEE UPDATES

ZONING

Our Zoning Committee is hard at work with lots of big projects in the neighborhood so be on the lookout for a zoning-only message from OWANA in the next day or so.

EVENTS

Upcoming: Halloween Pre-Trick or Treating Party at West Austin Park
A get-together before the kids take over the streets for candy has been a neighborhood tradition for going on at least 15 years now (!). Details are forthcoming, but all are welcome to meet up at the park. We’ll have food for kids and it’s BYOB for everyone else. Even if you don’t have kids, it’s a lot of fun to see all the costumes (on the adults too!) and enjoy the neighborhood fellowship.

Upcoming: November 15 Music in the Park
Save the Date of November 15 for another great afternoon of live music from local musicians at West Austin Park.
Details to come!

If any of you like event planning and want to help out with these and other OWANA events, we need your help! Email us at oldwestaustin@gmail.com.

These events would not be possible without our sponsors. THANK YOU!

Photo Descriptions:

Top Left: The inside of Waterloo Records on the original location’s last day open. The new location opened on Saturday, August 30, at the 1105 N. Lamar neigborhood. We’re so happy to see this iconic Austin business remain open and moving into the future with new store features. Check it out!

Top Right: While the pool opened a little late due to mechanical issues, and much of the summer was rainy, the West Austin Pool continued to provide relief from summer heat for our neighborhood residents. Residents even had a frequent evening water aerobics class!

Bottom Left: Pease Park recently celebrated its 150th anniversary! Pease Park serves as an important urban greenspace and a beloved part of Austin’s landscape utilized by many in our neighborhood.

Bottom Right: A Donn’s Depot patron enjoying music and honoring late musician Chris Gage.
