Online retailer Huckberry recently released a list of “The 50 Best Dive Bars in America.” According to the Austin American-Statesman, Donn’s Depot made the ranking at No. 45. Housed in an old train depot purchased in 1972 by Bob Ogden for $300, the bar became a local institution under pianist Donn Adelman who bought the business from Bob. Despite the rapid development around it, Donn’s Depot retains its sense of community; longtime regulars still gather to watch Jeopardy in the afternoons before the music starts, and the dance floor continues to draw locals and even visiting celebrities.
Two other Austin classics also earned spots in the top 50 and they’re both within about a mile of Old West Austin. The Cloak Room (No. 43) sits in a basement near the Texas Capitol and has been a standby since 1979. Founded by lobbyist C.E. “Ed” Baxter, the bar is famous for its unpredictable atmosphere and rich history of legislators, judges and lobbyists trading tales. Deep Eddy Cabaret (No. 44) on Lake Austin Blvd. is celebrated as a quintessential Austin experience. This long-standing neighborhood bar, located next to the Deep Eddy swimming pool, brings together hipsters, artists and cowboys among neon lights, pool tables and a jukebox that practically demands a Willie Nelson tune every hour.
