West 5th/West 6th Vision Committee Open House

Posted Wednesday, October 26, 2011

We need your assistance this Friday!

UT Director of Urban Design and Landscape Architecture, Dean Almy, and his 15 graduate students took on our W. 5th/W. 6th Vision Committee as their Fall Project and have completed a 3D computer model and maps of our geographical shell with zoning, compatibility standards, options for connectivity to the lake, future development plots, height restrictions, pedestrian paths, etc. to give us some ideas/details to think about for developing (or not) the corridors between Lamar and Mopac on W. 5th and W. 6th.

Professor Almy would like to present a 10-15 minute Power Point to a larger group of community people (land owners, biz owners, and residents) their progress up to this point as an introduction to their "planning process" and get feedback. He needs our input NOW, so they can complete the next design for a November 7th meeting. He would like to showcase this during his school hours this Friday between 1pm-5pm at Hartland Plaza 1717 W. 6th Street, 3rd floor conference room. Free parking is in the structure.

We will have two sessions/meetings: 1pm-3pm and 3pm-5pm on Friday, Oct. 28th. The first 10-15 minutes of each session will be a Power Point presentation followed by smaller break out group sessions to give feedback to his students in charette style. Depending on the output we receive from this Open House will determine if we will schedule a "formal" charette at a later date. We do not have time for a mass mailer, so email will have to suffice. Please pass this on to neighbors, businesses, and landowners you know.

It's a great time to have your voice heard regarding the future of our neighborhood!

The schedule is: 1pm - in the 3rd floor conference room at Hartland Plaza for Power Point Presentation; 1:15pm - go to assigned conference rooms or locations around the building for break out sessions. 3pm - in the 3rd floor conference room at Hartland Plaza for Power Point Presentation; 3:15pm - go to assigned conference rooms or locations around the building for break out sessions.

Thank you and hope to see you there!

Mathews School Friends for Excellence (MFE) Asks You to Submit Nominees for Excellence Award or Hall of Honor Award

Posted Tuesday, October 4, 2011

The MFE is an endowment fund created in 2005 as a way to support Mathews in being a "world-class" elementary school for each of its students, staff, parents and alumni. As of August 2011, MFE has received tax-deductible donations of $63,000. While the donated funds (principal) remain intact, the interest has financed initiatives for Mathews student and teacher programs, as well as alumni scholarships. You are welcome to join the committee which meets at Mathews at noon on the second Tuesday of the month. Even if you can't attend meetings, you can support the MFE by working on special projects or by making a donation online at www.austincommunityfoundation.org or by dropping a check off at the Mathews office. If you have questions or to discuss how you can contribute your time or talent send us an email: mfe@mathews360.com

MFE is currently soliciting applications from the community for this year's Excellence Award and Hall of Honor Award. The Excellence Award specifically funds one or more student programs annually at Mathews with the total amount awarded up to $500. Please request a grant application or submit an idea for a project by emailing mfe@mathews360.com. The deadline is December 1, 2011. You can go online to the Mathews 360 site to see previously funded projects. Click on Donate.

Also, consider submitting an application for the Mathews Hall of Honor Award, which recognizes former students, and staff who have made a significant contribution to Mathews Elementary School, our community, or the world. Email your nomination or questions to: mfe@mathews360.com

These awards, along with the student scholarship will be presented Spring 2012. Thank you for your support.
