A local historic district application has been filed to create the Castle Hill Historic District. About a year ago, residents of Blanco Street began an effort to apply for a zoning overlay to protect the special character of their street. As more of the neighbors learned about the initiative, the original Blanco Street LHD application was amended to include Baylor Street, and the intersecting streets of West 7th, 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th. The name of the proposed district was altered to reflect the inclusion of the iconic “Castle” property -- the site of the former Texas Military Institute. Most of the properties contained within the proposed Castle Hill district were subdivided from the Texas Military Institute’s original land.
The draft design guidelines and district map can be downloaded from the Documents page.
The hearing is scheduled to be heard by the Historic Landmark Commission Monday, February 22, at 7 p.m. in City Council Chambers (301 W. 2nd Street at City Hall). There will be two more public hearings scheduled for the Planning Commission and City Council to determine if the ordinance will pass at a later date.
