Minutes from Old West Austin Neighborhood Association
Fall General Membership Meeting, Sept. 12, 2000.

Approximately 40 people were in attendance, enjoying the outdoors at Mathews School (since the electricity was out inside the building).

OWANA Steering Committee Chair David Smith presided.

1.  Construction related to the traffic calming plan is scheduled to start in Spring 2001.

2.  Two vacancies on the steering committee were filled with unanimous consent: Laura Morrison and Katie O'Neill.

3.  The Mopac Noise Abatement Coalition (MONAC) has revived. It includes all neighborhood associations from 2222 to Town Lake.  Since there are active plans to expand Mopac, this issue will increase in importance. One person in attendance pointed out a new source of Mopac noise: traffic-reporting helicopters.  Contact David Smith (320-8625) if interested in additional information.

4.  Neighborhood Plan:  Dave Sullivan, chair of the neighborhood plan implementation committee,  asked for volunteers to serve on the group that will coordinate the actual use of the plan, which was adopted by the City Council this summer.  The group will probably meet twice a month.  Contact Dave at 476-7872.

Mark Stine, who was chair of the group that drafted the plan, is working with a group to develop designs for pedestrian-friendly model corridors.  Fifth Street from Lamar to Mopac will be the likely test. Volunteers needed (472-4113).

5.  Miscellaneous news:
- The telecommunications tower on West Lynn was recently sold, but will remain.  There are hopes the new owners will improve the landscaping.
- The recent surveying on West Lynn was routine and not part of expansion or the traffic calming plan.

6.  Presentation on light rail proposal.  City Council member Daryl Slusher gave a presentation asking for support for the proposed light rail system that will be on the November ballot.
